Privacy policy
This explains what personal data The Shared Standard handles when you use this website, why, who else sees it, and what you can ask us to do about it. It is written to be read rather than survived.
Effective 22 September 2026. This replaces the earlier version of this page.
Who is responsible
The Shared Standard Pte. Ltd., a Singapore private limited company, UEN 202534330H, is the organisation responsible for personal data collected through this website under Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act 2012.
Questions about personal data, including asking to see, correct or delete what we hold, go to [email protected]. That address reaches the person responsible for data protection here, and it is the contact point the Act requires us to publish.
What we handle, and why
When you read a page
Server records. This site is hosted by Cloudflare. Like any web server it records the requests it receives, which includes your IP address, the page requested, the time and your browser's user agent. That is automatic and it is what makes serving the site possible and keeps it secure. We do not analyse those records, build profiles from them or use them for marketing.
Almost nothing loads from anywhere else. The fonts, the stylesheet, the images and the site's own scripts are all served from this domain. There is no font CDN, no embedded video, no map, no social widget and no advertising network. The two exceptions are the measurement scripts described below, one from Cloudflare and one from Google, and they are the only requests a page makes to anywhere else.
Cloudflare Web Analytics, always on. This counts page views, in aggregate. It sets no cookie, writes nothing to your device, builds no profile and cannot recognise you on a second visit or on any other site. The small script that does the counting is loaded from Cloudflare's own address, and what it counts is sent back to this domain rather than out to a third party. Cloudflare already hosts this site, so no new company is involved.
Google Analytics, and the cookie it sets. This tells us which pages get read, where readers arrive from, roughly which country they are in and what kind of device they use. To do that it sets a cookie in your browser, named _ga and one beginning _ga_, which gives you an identifier so that two page views in one visit are not counted as two visits. Your IP address is truncated before it is stored. Every advertising feature is turned off, so this data is not used to target you and is not shared with Google for advertising, and the detailed records Google keeps for us are set to 2 months, which is the shortest retention Google allows, counted from your most recent visit rather than from your first.
Whether you are asked first depends on where you are, because the law does. If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, nothing loads and no cookie is set until you answer the banner, declining is exactly as easy as accepting, and if you decline the Google tag is never requested at all. Elsewhere, including Singapore, measurement starts with your first page view, which is what the Personal Data Protection Act permits and what nearly every site you use already does. We say so here rather than leaving you to find out.
Either way your choice is remembered in your browser's own storage, so you are not asked twice. Clearing this site's data clears that choice, and a reader in Europe is asked again. If you would rather not be measured at all, any browser setting or extension that blocks Google Analytics works here, and we make no attempt to detect or defeat it.
What we still do not do. No tag manager, no advertising or social pixel, no session or scroll recording, no heatmaps, no A or B testing, no advertising, and nothing sold or given to a data broker. We look at which pages get read so we know what to write next. That is the whole purpose.
When you use the interview tool
The interview and values tool runs entirely in your browser. Your selections are never sent to us or to anyone else, nothing is written to storage on your device, and closing the tab is the end of it. There is no account and no email step, and the guide is generated on your own machine. We receive nothing at all from your use of it.
When you buy a workbook
The payment is not ours to handle. Checkout runs on Stripe, which acts as merchant of record. It takes the payment, issues the receipt and collects any tax due where you live. We never see or hold your card details. The buy button is an ordinary link to their checkout page, so nothing of theirs loads on this site while you are reading it.
What reaches us, and why. Your name, your email address, which workbook you bought, the date, and a licence number generated for that sale. We use it to produce your copy, to send the file again if you lose it, and to keep the record of the sale that Singapore law requires us to keep.
Your copy carries your details. Your name, your email address and the date of purchase are printed in the footer of every page of the workbook you download, and the licence number is recorded against your sale. This is how a copy that ends up in a group chat can be traced back to the person who put it there. It is stated in the terms of sale before you buy, and it is the condition on which the workbook is sold.
How long we keep it. Five years after the end of the financial year in which you bought, which is the period Singapore requires business records to be kept for, and then it is deleted. Ask us sooner and we will delete anything we are not obliged to keep.
Buying does not sign you up for anything. There is no newsletter and no marketing list. We write to you about your order and nothing else. Your address is never sold, rented or passed to anyone marketing to you.
When you write to us
We then hold your email address and whatever you put in the message, to answer you and to keep a record of the exchange. Mail to [email protected] is routed by Cloudflare Email Routing into a Google mailbox, so both providers process it in the course of delivering it.
We keep correspondence while it is useful for the matter it concerns and no longer than we have a reason to. Ask us to delete an exchange and we will, unless we are required to keep it.
Your address is never sold, never rented, and never passed to an employment agency, an insurer, a recruiter or anyone else who wants to market to you.
If you ask for the research
The research page invites you to write and ask for the thesis or for the aggregate figures behind a number. We use your message to answer it. The individual survey responses are not disclosed to anyone, in line with what the participants were told.
Who else is involved
Three providers help run the site, and they handle data only to provide their service to us. Cloudflare hosts the website, routes mail for the domain, provides the cookieless page counting described above, and stores and serves the workbook files. Google provides Google Analytics, and separately the mailbox that receives contact@ mail. Google processes analytics data on servers outside Singapore, including in the United States. Stripe runs the checkout as merchant of record, holds the payment record for your order, and tells us your name and email address so your copy can be made. That is the whole list. There is no advertising network, no data broker and no other analytics vendor.
Some of them operate outside Singapore, so reading this site or writing to us can involve a transfer of data out of Singapore. We rely on those providers' contractual data protection terms, which is the basis the Act permits for transfers of this kind.
What you can ask for
You can ask what personal data we hold about you and how it has been used, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or withdraw consent for a use you previously agreed to. Write to [email protected] and you will get an answer from a person, within thirty days and usually much sooner.
If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area you may also have rights under the UK GDPR or the GDPR, including access, correction, erasure, restriction, portability and objection. Use the same address and we will handle it on that basis.
If you think we have handled your data badly, tell us first so we can put it right. You can also complain to the Personal Data Protection Commission of Singapore, or to your own supervisory authority if you are in the UK or the EEA.
Children
This site is written for adults who employ someone in their home. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.
When this changes
This version adds the section on buying a workbook, naming Stripe as merchant of record and setting out what we hold about a buyer, for how long, and what is printed inside the file itself. The previous version promised that this would appear before the first sale rather than after it, and it does.
Any other change to what we collect will be described here, with its effective date, before it starts.
Effective 22 September 2026. If you are reading a printed copy of one of the books and it points you here for a form or a tool, the books are correct that both are free, and this page is the current word on what is where.
